After one and a half years of small scale rat trapping we have spotted our first forest gecko (Mokopirirakau granulatus). Great to see that the numbers could be on the climb. This female looks pregnant too!
Geckos play an important predator and prey roll in a forest ecosystem, as well as dispersing seeds from small fruits and pollinating plants. These geckos can change their shade of grey/brown/green to enhance their camouflage.
We are very happy with this discovery, it’s reassurance that all the four legged mammal trapping is having an effect.
