Dr Mike Joy, Senior Lecturer in Ecology & Environmental Science, Massey University, Palmerston North spoke about our bad water quality in New Zealand.
The audience, many of whom came just to listen to this speaker, were well rewarded for their efforts. Mike’s lecture, backed with good scientific evidence, was an indictment to successive Governments who have put a value on growth for short term monetary gain.
He described how, despite repeated warnings from the scientific community and activists; our parliamentary system has failed to account for the degradation that unfettered development has caused our unique natural heritage. He was particularly critical of the dairy industry as we know it today.
The desecration of waterways, wetlands and the growth of insidious pathogens and plant based invasions is a danger to any future. Years of publicly funded research is regularly scrapped in favour of fudged pseudo-scientific reports designed to dupe the voting public.
Dr Joy praised active and activist groups such as FOOB for being the only hope for New Zealand as a home for mankind alongside natural species.
The FOOB Executive is very grateful that Dr Joy agreed to speak at our AGM.
